US Deporting Africans to Countries That Are Not Their Own
Original: US: Deportations to African Countries Not Their Own
Human Rights Watch reports that the United States is deporting African migrants to third countries in Africa with no connection to their nationality or origin. The practice is being condemned as a violation of international human rights law, which prohibits removal to states where people lack ties or face potential harm. Critics are calling on Washington to end the transfers and explain the legal basis for them.
Why now: Fresh condemnation from Human Rights Watch has put the US deportation policy under renewed scrutiny.
