US Expelling Third-Country Nationals to African Countries, HRW Says
Original: “To Scare People”: US Expulsions of Third-Country Nationals to Countries in Africa | HRW
Human Rights Watch reports that the United States is expelling third-country nationals to countries in Africa where they have no origin ties. The group says these deportations are carried out, in its words, 'to scare people' and deter others from seeking asylum. The findings add to criticism of US deportation policies, with rights advocates warning that sending migrants to unfamiliar third countries exposes them to danger.
Why now: A new Human Rights Watch report criticizing US deportation practices has drawn attention to the treatment of migrants.
