Scientists warn that the collapse of chinstrap penguin populations may be accelerating so rapidly that the distinctive bird, named for the black line running below its beak from cheek to cheek, could soon need to be classified as an endangered species. The warning ties the species' decline to rapid environmental change in its Antarctic habitat, prompting concern among climate and conservation observers.

Why now: New warnings about the accelerating collapse of chinstrap penguin populations are raising alarm over their endangered status amid ongoing climate concerns.
