The people holding up the internet
A data visualization project highlights the often invisible workers who keep the internet running, from submarine cable crews and data center technicians to network engineers. The piece frames global connectivity as dependent on a largely unrecognized workforce maintaining cables, servers and routing infrastructure around the clock. Readers have been sharing it as a reminder that the internet is physical infrastructure built and maintained by people, not an abstract cloud.
Why now: It reframes the internet as physical infrastructure maintained by unseen workers, a angle that resonates with tech audiences.
