Syrian general accused of atrocities protected by US and Lebanon, BBC finds
Original: Syrian general accused of atrocities paid and protected by US and Lebanon, BBC finds https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles
A BBC investigation reports that a Syrian general accused of atrocities has been paid and protected by the United States and Lebanon. The findings raise questions about why figures linked to serious human rights abuses have received support from Western and Lebanese security partners. The story is drawing attention to accountability gaps and the compromises made in counterterrorism and regional security cooperation.
Why now: The BBC's new investigation alleges that US and Lebanese authorities funded and shielded a figure accused of grave human rights abuses, a surprising and politically sensitive claim.
