Trump brings disaster relief funding into midterm campaign rhetoric
Original: Disaster relief funding creeps into Trump's midterm rhetoric. Critics say it has no place there
Donald Trump has begun weaving disaster relief funding into his messaging ahead of the midterm elections, drawing criticism that disaster aid should stay above electoral politics. Critics argue linking federal emergency funding to campaign talking points politicizes support meant for communities recovering from hurricanes, floods and other disasters. The debate touches on how relief money is allocated and whether voters in disaster-affected states can expect fair treatment regardless of political alignment.
Why now: Trump's use of disaster relief in midterm campaign messaging has sparked controversy over politicizing federal aid.
