EU trade envoy calls China trade deficit 'unsustainable' in Beijing
Original: In Beijing, EU trade envoy says deficit with China 'unsustainable'
The European Union's trade envoy, visiting Beijing, described the EU's trade deficit with China as 'unsustainable'. The statement signals growing European frustration over imbalanced trade ties and limited market access for EU firms, adding pressure to ongoing EU-China economic negotiations. It comes amid broader tensions over tariffs, industrial overcapacity and calls in Europe to reduce economic dependence on Beijing.
Why now: EU-China trade tensions are a pressing topic as the envoy's remarks signal hardening European positions during a visit to Beijing.
