Monbiot questions official advice on preparing for environmental catastrophe
Original: Stockpile food – and wash your hands: is that really how to prepare for environmental catastrophe?
Guardian columnist George Monbiot argues that UK government advice on preparing for environmental disaster — stockpiling food and washing hands — shifts responsibility onto individuals while the state green-lights policies that push the country closer to crisis. He says ministers are dumping their obligations on citizens' doorsteps rather than addressing the root causes of climate and ecological breakdown, prompting debate about who should bear the burden of resilience.
Why now: The column challenges UK government crisis-preparedness messaging amid growing public concern about climate and environmental collapse.
