Eight in ten heritage employers report skills gaps
A large majority of heritage sector employers say they face skills shortages, with eight in ten reporting gaps in the expertise needed to look after historic buildings, landscapes and collections. Employers point to shortages in traditional crafts such as stonemasonry, conservation and repair work, and warn that an ageing workforce and limited training pipelines could leave historic sites without the people needed to maintain them. The finding has prompted calls for more investment in heritage training programmes.
Why now: A newly published survey highlighting widespread skills shortages in the heritage sector has drawn attention to the risk to historic buildings and sites.
