Original: Twenty Years On, Tributes Honor Slain Journalist Anna Politkovskaya
Anna Politkovskaya, the Russian journalist known for her reporting on the war in Chechnya and criticism of the Kremlin, was shot dead in her Moscow apartment building on 7 October 2006. Twenty years later, tributes are honoring her memory and her work, with many stressing the unfinished fight for press freedom in Russia and the fact that the masterminds behind her killing have never been identified.
Why now: The twentieth anniversary of her assassination has prompted renewed tributes and debate about press freedom in Russia.
