A joint investigation by NPR and the BBC reports that a Syrian general accused of atrocities is being protected by the United States and Lebanon. The reporting, which also touches on the FBI's case involving American journalist Austin Tice, raises questions about why Washington and Beirut are shielding an official implicated in serious abuses, prompting renewed debate over accountability for war crimes in Syria.
Why now: The NPR and BBC joint finding that U.S. and Lebanese authorities are protecting a general accused of atrocities is a striking accountability story drawing fresh attention.
