Hubble Turns to NGC 1068 to Study Black Hole Feedback

Original: What is Hubble observing? Target: BD-00-413, NGC1068-SLIT-START, WAVEHITM, WAVELINE Target Category: Supermassive Black

The Hubble Space Telescope is currently observing NGC 1068, a nearby galaxy with an active supermassive black hole at its centre. The observations are part of a research programme using an ultraviolet integral field unit to study how energy from the black hole, known as AGN feedback, affects star formation in the galaxy. Calibration targets such as BD-00-413 are also in the observation schedule.

Why now: Astronomy watchers follow what Hubble is observing in real time, and active galaxies with supermassive black holes draw strong interest.
