Space Agencies Hunt for Alien Life Without a Plan for Success
Original: Many Space Missions Are Searching for Life Beyond Earth – But Are We Prepared for the Fallout If They Succeed?
Commentary argues that the many current space missions searching for life beyond Earth raise an unaddressed question: what happens if one of them actually succeeds. The piece suggests humanity lacks agreed protocols for confirming extraterrestrial life and managing the scientific, religious and societal fallout such a discovery would trigger, calling on policymakers to prepare before it happens.
Why now: Ongoing missions to Mars, Europa and elsewhere keep the question of detecting alien life in public debate.
