Debate erupts over Abraham and modern views of faith
Original: Theists: Nowadays, if you said God told you to kill your child, you'd be considered mentally ill. Why revere Abraham? __
A challenge to religious believers is circulating online: if someone today claimed God ordered them to kill their child, they would be judged mentally ill, so why is Abraham revered for nearly sacrificing Isaac? The question has drawn atheist and secular users into a familiar argument about whether faith in divine commands can ever be reconciled with modern moral standards.
Why now: The provocative framing of a classic problem of faith and morality is reigniting secular-versus-religious debate online.
