Hallie Shoffner, a former rice and soybean farmer and the Democratic Senate nominee in Arkansas, is running a long-shot campaign against Republican incumbent Senator Tom Cotton, positioning herself against Big Ag. An August survey reportedly showed her leading Cotton by three points, while Cotton's campaign has drawn more than $10 million in spending linked to defense contractors and AIPAC.

Why now: An unexpected poll showing a long-shot Democrat leading a well-funded incumbent senator has drawn attention to the Arkansas race.
