New research finds wild Bornean orangutan mothers deliberately adjust their daily travel routes so their infants can meet and play with other young orangutans. Although orangutans are mostly solitary in the canopy, mothers appear to seek out neighbouring youngsters, suggesting social play is important enough to shape the movement patterns of these normally solitary apes.

Why now: Fresh findings showing deliberate social planning by a species thought to be solitary challenge assumptions about orangutan behaviour.
