Bears in the news: new cubs in the Pyrenees, fatal attack in Mongolia

Original: ours

Two separate bear stories are drawing attention. In the French Pyrenees, sixteen brown bear cubs were born this year, but conservationists warn that inbreeding remains a persistent problem for the reintroduced population. In Mongolia, a man was killed by a bear and a woman seriously injured in an attack. Together the reports highlight both the success and the risks surrounding bear populations.

Why now: Fresh reports on bear conservation in France and a deadly bear attack in Mongolia have renewed public interest in the animals.
