Researchers have found an estimated 180,000 giant tortoises living on an island in the Seychelles, according to a Guardian report. The finding highlights the islands' importance as a stronghold for the species, which has faced severe declines elsewhere, and is drawing attention from conservationists and wildlife watchers.
Why now: The surprisingly large tortoise population is a rare piece of good conservation news.
