Patricia McCormick's Novel Now America's Most Banned Book
Original: 20 Years Ago, Patricia McCormick Wrote a Novel About Sexual Violence to ‘Open Hearts.’ Now It’s the Most Banned Book in the Country.
Patricia McCormick's novel about sexual violence, published two decades ago with the aim of opening hearts to survivors' experiences, has become the most banned book in the United States, according to PEN America. The designation highlights the ongoing surge in school and library book challenges, particularly titles dealing with sexual content and trauma. PEN America's report frames the ban as part of a wider censorship wave affecting young adult literature nationwide.
Why now: PEN America has just named the novel the most banned book in the country amid an ongoing national debate over book bans.
