A look at woodpecker anatomy is drawing attention online: the bird's tongue splits in two near the back and wraps around behind the skull when retracted, allowing it to extend far out of the beak. Readers are reacting with surprise to the unusual structure, which is a well-documented feature of woodpecker biology.
Why now: People are sharing the surprising anatomical fact because woodpecker tongue structure is genuinely counterintuitive and little known.
