Mortal Kombat's Johnny Cage Debuted 34 Years Ago After Van Damme Deal Collapsed
Original: 34 Years Ago, a Future Video Game Hall of Famer Debuted After Plans to Feature Jean-Claude Van Damme Fell Through
Thirty-four years ago, Johnny Cage made his debut in Mortal Kombat after developers failed to secure Jean-Claude Van Damme for the fighting game. Midway originally built the project around the action star, and when the deal fell through, they created an original character modeled on him instead. Cage went on to become one of the franchise's most recognizable figures and a Video Game Hall of Famer.
Why now: The anniversary of the character's debut has prompted retrospectives on the game's unusual origins.
