Israel's foreign minister says Colombia will open its embassy in Jerusalem, a move that would align it with a small group of countries recognising the contested city as Israel's capital. According to the report, Colombian President Abelardo De la Espriella had promised closer ties with Israel during his election campaign, and the announcement follows through on that pledge. The decision is drawing attention because most embassies remain in Tel Aviv and the status of Jerusalem is one of the most sensitive issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Why now: Moving an embassy to Jerusalem is a diplomatically charged step that few countries have taken, and it signals a notable shift in Colombia's foreign policy.
