Laotian man deported by US to South Sudan heads home to Laos
Original: Laotian man deported by US to South Sudan leaves for Laos after year in detention
A Laotian man who was deported by the United States to South Sudan has left for Laos after spending roughly a year in detention. The case drew attention because he was sent to a country with no ties to him as part of US deportation efforts to third countries. His departure ends a prolonged ordeal that human rights advocates had criticised.
Why now: The unusual US practice of deporting immigrants to third countries like South Sudan has made this man's year-long detention and eventual return newsworthy.
