NATO to hold annual nuclear drill with 17 countries in Italy
Original: NATO to hold annual nuclear defence drill with 17 countries in Italy
NATO is holding its annual nuclear deterrence exercise, Steadfast Noon, with 17 countries taking part and operations based in Italy. The drill involves aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons but does not use live warheads, and is described as a routine, long-planned exercise to test the alliance's nuclear deterrent and readiness.
Why now: Rising nuclear tensions linked to the war in Ukraine and broader East-West confrontation are drawing attention to NATO's nuclear readiness drills.
