Trump awards Elon Musk the National Medal of Science
President Donald Trump has presented Elon Musk with the National Medal of Science, the top US scientific honour. The award to the Tesla and SpaceX chief is drawing attention given the two men's high profiles and past political tensions. Supporters are calling it recognition of Musk's work in spaceflight and electric vehicles, while critics question the choice given his polarising public role.
Why now: The pairing of a sitting president and the world's most prominent tech billionaire at a prestigious science ceremony is inherently newsworthy and politically charged.
