SafeSport Bans Olympic Gymnastics Coach Artur Akopyan For Life
The US Center for SafeSport has issued a lifetime ban to Artur Akopyan, an Olympic gymnastics coach, barring him from the sport permanently. The ban stems from misconduct findings under SafeSport's jurisdiction, which covers abuse and misconduct in Olympic and Paralympic sports in the United States. Lifetime sanctions are among the most severe penalties SafeSport can issue, and news of the ban has drawn attention within gymnastics and the wider Olympic community.
Why now: A lifetime ban of a prominent Olympic gymnastics coach over misconduct is a significant development in the sport's ongoing reckoning with abuse.
