A new report records roughly 12,000 books banned this year, the highest figure yet, with the overwhelming majority concentrated in Texas and Florida. Advocates linking the bans to attacks on LGBTQ content are pushing back, arguing that trans rights and free expression are human rights, and calling for organizing against censorship in US schools and libraries.
Why now: A record number of book bans, heavily concentrated in two states, has reignited debate over censorship and LGBTQ rights in the US.
