US balances Houthi diplomacy with support for Saudi offensive
The United States is pursuing talks with Yemen's Houthi movement while continuing to back Saudi Arabia's military offensive in Yemen. The dual-track approach highlights Washington's effort to push diplomacy aimed at ending the war without fracturing its long-standing security partnership with Riyadh. Commentators see it as a test of whether the administration can reconcile its diplomatic outreach with its arms and support ties to the Saudi-led coalition.
Why now: The apparent contradiction between US peace diplomacy and support for the Saudi military campaign is drawing scrutiny amid ongoing fighting in Yemen.
