Original: fort hood shooter

The US Army has set a date for Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan to face a firing squad. Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist, carried out the 2009 shooting at the Texas base that killed 13 people and wounded dozens more. He has been on death row since his 2013 court-martial conviction, and the scheduling marks a step toward the first military execution in decades.

Why now: The Army has announced a concrete date for carrying out the death sentence, reviving attention to a case that has lingered for over a decade.
