The Pentagon says the firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, will be livestreamed, a decision critics including legal commentators are calling a return to barbaric public executions. Hasan was sentenced to death for the 2009 attack that killed 13 people. The move has sparked outrage and debate over the spectacle of televised state killings.

Why now: News that the Pentagon will livestream an execution has provoked strong reactions about whether this amounts to a modern public execution.
