Original: St. Louis Cardinals prove that defense does not indeed win championships The old saying goes "Defense wins championships
The St. Louis Cardinals are being used as a case study against the old adage that defense wins championships. Commentators argue the team's stellar fielding has not translated into wins, suggesting pitching and offense matter far more, and the debate is drawing attention from baseball fans.
Why now: The Cardinals' recent lack of team success despite elite defensive play is prompting debate about the value of defense in baseball.
