President Donald Trump has awarded the US National Medal of Science to Elon Musk and several other technology executives, according to Al Jazeera. The medal is traditionally given annually to scientists and engineers for outstanding contributions to knowledge, and the choice of industry leaders over researchers is drawing criticism and debate.
Why now: Giving the nation's top science honour to business figures rather than scientists is controversial and challenges the award's tradition.
