New Brazil Congress poses risk to environmental laws, campaigners warn

Original: New Brazil Congress poses risk to environmental legislation, campaign group says

A campaign group warns that Brazil's newly seated Congress poses a risk to environmental legislation, according to reporting by Reuters and U.S. News & World Report. The outgoing legislature was seen as a check on agribusiness-backed efforts to weaken protections for the Amazon and other biomes, and observers fear the incoming chamber could advance bills loosening environmental licensing and land-use rules.

Why now: The new Brazilian legislature's composition raises fears of weakened Amazon and environmental protections.
