Tina Peters, a Colorado county clerk convicted for her role in an election system breach, met with Donald Trump and described a proposal under which the federal government would seize election ballots and conduct its own hand count. The claim has circulated widely ahead of the midterms, drawing alarm from election officials who warn such a plan would undermine state control of elections, while Trump allies have promoted her continued involvement in election circles despite her conviction.
Why now: The disclosure of a plan for federal seizure and hand-counting of ballots ahead of the midterms has raised alarm about election integrity and Trump's inner circle.
