Original: Tribal Groups Concerned As Interior Downplays Western Arctic Drilling Environmental Risks (Update)
Alaska tribal groups are raising concerns that the Interior Department is downplaying the environmental risks of oil and gas drilling in the Western Arctic. The groups argue federal assessments understate threats to wildlife, subsistence livelihoods and lands in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska, and they are pressing for stronger safeguards before drilling activity expands.
Why now: Tribal and environmental concerns over expanding drilling in Alaska's Western Arctic are drawing renewed attention to Interior Department decisions.
