Fort Hood shooter's execution to be open to public, Hegseth says

Original: Public will be able to watch Fort Hood shooter's execution, Hegseth says

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says the public will be allowed to witness the execution of Nidal Hasan, the US Army psychiatrist convicted of the 2009 Fort Hood shooting that killed 13 people. Hasan, who has been on death row since his 2013 court-martial, is set to die by firing squad, and opening the execution to the public is a rare and closely watched decision.

Why now: The decision to allow a public execution of a notorious mass shooter is highly unusual, prompting debate over transparency and punishment.
