France bans hunting of the capercaillie
Original: gibier
France has prohibited the hunting of the capercaillie, the largest wild land bird in Europe, Le Monde reports. The decision ends hunts of the endangered grouse species, which survives in small populations in the French mountains. It comes amid debate in France over hunting practices and 'gibier' (wild game), as animal welfare groups push for stronger protections for threatened species.
Why now: The hunting ban on an emblematic endangered bird is fresh news and feeds the ongoing French debate over hunting and wildlife protection.
