Gentoo penguins' flexible traits help them weather climate change
Original: “A suite of traits help # gentoos deal with climate change. They're not fussy eaters – unlike their two closest relative
Gentoo penguins are proving more resilient to climate change than their closest relatives, thanks to a set of adaptable traits. Unlike Adélie and chinstrap penguins, gentoos are not fussy eaters and will switch their diet from krill to fish depending on what is available. They can also relay if their eggs are destroyed by floods or other freak events. The flexibility helps explain why gentoo populations are holding up while other Antarctic penguin species decline.
Why now: New findings on gentoo penguins' adaptability offer a rare positive angle on how wildlife copes with climate change in Antarctica.
