Microsoft is forming a new division called XP, part of Xbox, aimed at growing its business around brands like Minecraft and Fallout beyond video games. The unit will be led by Mojang's current head. The move signals Microsoft's intent to turn its biggest game franchises into broader entertainment properties, and commentators see it as a further step in Xbox's evolution from a console business into a wider brand and media operation.
Why now: Microsoft rarely restructures Xbox, so a new division led by Mojang's chief suggests a major push to monetise its game franchises outside gaming.
