Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay, a South African lawyer who grew up under apartheid, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Pillay built a career as a defender of international law at the United Nations, serving as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and as a prosecutor of war crimes at international tribunals. Commentators are praising the choice of a woman whose life embodied the struggle against oppression and law-based international relations.
Why now: The Nobel Peace Prize announcement naming Navi Pillay is fresh news and her profile under apartheid and at the UN makes her an inspiring, widely discussed choice.
