China Proposes Reciprocal Nuclear Laboratory Visits
Original: Why Is China Proposing Reciprocal Nuclear Laboratory Visits?
China has put forward a proposal for reciprocal visits to nuclear laboratories, raising questions about its aims in arms control diplomacy. The idea, examined by The Diplomat, would allow mutual inspections of nuclear facilities, echoing earlier US-Russian verification arrangements. Analysts are weighing whether the offer signals genuine interest in transparency and strategic stability, or a diplomatic gesture aimed at shaping perceptions amid stalled nuclear talks and growing competition with the United States.
Why now: The proposal is novel and touches on sensitive US-China nuclear arms control discussions at a time of strategic rivalry.
