Researchers in South Africa report that wild African savanna elephants use more than 40 distinct physical gestures during competitive interactions, signalling others to move away or stop particular actions. The study found elephants check whether others are paying attention before gesturing and repeat signals when the first attempt fails, pointing to intentional communication.

Why now: A new study offers fresh evidence of deliberate, human-like communication in wild elephants.
