The French government has promised to hire 3,000 additional teachers in what it calls a first step toward defusing ongoing student protests. The announcement is being seen as an attempt to address overcrowded classrooms and staffing shortages that have fueled demonstrations in schools across the country. Observers are watching whether the concession will be enough to end the unrest or whether further measures will be demanded.
