Report says Russia may deploy nuclear weapons in space to counter U.S. missile defenses
Original: Russia may turn to nuclear space weapons to counter U.S. missile defenses, report says
A new report says Russia may turn to nuclear space weapons as a way to counter U.S. missile defense systems. Such a move would raise serious concerns, since a nuclear detonation in orbit could disable satellites and destabilize military communications. Analysts are watching whether Moscow pursues the option amid worsening U.S.-Russia relations and ongoing disputes over missile defense deployments.
Why now: Renewed tensions between Russia and the United States over missile defenses have put potential space-based nuclear threats back in focus.
