Age Verification Laws Raise Fears of Excluding the Unverified
Original: When No ID Means No Internet: Age Verification and the Right to Access Information https:// lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/766944
A discussion is underway about age verification requirements for internet access and their impact on people who lack identification. Critics argue that demanding ID to go online effectively bars those without documents — including homeless people, migrants and privacy-conscious users — from accessing information, framing internet access as a right that such laws undermine. Supporters of verification say it protects minors, but the debate centers on whether safety rules are creating a new barrier to basic digital participation.
Why now: Age verification mandates are rolling out in more countries, sparking debate over privacy and equal access to the internet.
