Trump exempts Arctic winter oil and gas drilling from environmental review
The Trump administration has exempted winter oil and gas drilling in the Arctic from environmental review, removing a layer of regulatory oversight for drilling operations conducted during the frozen season. Conservation groups, including the Center for Western Priorities, are criticizing the move, arguing it weakens protections for fragile Arctic ecosystems at a time when drilling activity in Alaska remains contentious.
Why now: The exemption is a new policy change with potential environmental consequences in the Arctic, drawing criticism from conservation advocates.
