Nidal Hasan and the Return of the Military Firing Squad
Discussion centers on Nidal Hasan, the US Army major behind the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, and renewed attention to the military's option of execution by firing squad. Commentary is examining how the US military carries out death sentences and whether Hasan's long-pending case could revive this method. The Fort Hood massacre remains one of the deadliest attacks on a US military installation.
Why now: Renewed debate over military executions and the unresolved Nidal Hasan death penalty case has put the firing squad back in public discussion.
