Original: Laotian man deported by US to South Sudan leaves for Laos after year in detention | World News | 2news.com
A Laotian man who was deported from the United States to South Sudan has been allowed to leave for Laos after spending roughly a year in detention there. His case drew attention to US deportation practices involving third countries, with critics questioning why he was sent so far from his homeland and held for so long before being permitted to return to Laos.
Why now: The unusual and controversial US decision to deport him to South Sudan rather than Laos, and his year-long detention, kept the case in the news.
