African antelopes spreading across New Mexico
Original: African antelopes spreading in New Mexico: How far could they go under climate change?
Oryx, antelopes native to Africa, are expanding across New Mexico, where they were introduced decades ago and now roam widely in the desert Southwest. Scientists are studying how far the species could spread as climate change alters habitats, raising questions about their impact on native ecosystems and how wildlife managers should respond to their growing range.
Why now: New research suggests warming conditions could allow the nonnative antelopes to expand much further, raising concerns about invasive species.
