Ofsted is under renewed pressure to suspend graded school inspections in England. Campaigners and education figures have repeatedly argued that single-word judgments create unmanageable stress for school leaders and staff, a debate intensified since the death of headteacher Ruth Perry in 2023. The BBC reports that fresh demands have now been made for the inspectorate to pause graded inspections while reforms are considered.
Why now: Renewed campaigning over inspection pressure on teachers has reignited debate about Ofsted's grading system.
